Apulia & Basilicata

Standard

2018, in the deepest South of Italy: The weasel pays a visit to one of only two megachurches in europe, takes a quick glance at the cave city of Matera and chills by the pool in Monte Sant´Angelo, 800 metres above the Gulf of Manfredonia.

Castel del Monte

Standard

Region of Puglia, Italy, November 2015.

Castel del Monte sits on a hilltop like a crown on the dome of a giant. The fortress is perfectly symetric, sleek and lean, bulky and massy, fragile and intimidating and bombastic and all of that at the same time.

The weasel was not impressed. Weasels are simultaneously bombastic yet delicate themselves.

Matera

Standard

Matera, Region of Basilicata, southern Italy.
Once the poor house of europe. Until the mid 50s, people lived in damp, cold caves together with their livestock.

Filmmakers love Matera (and Craco). Both towns are often used as stand-ins for cities in the near east, like Jerusalem. In Craco “The Passion of Christ” was shot by Mel Gibson, while few weeks after our visit “Wonder Woman” (the 2017 version) was filmed in Matera.

However, the weasel doesn´t care about movies, as long as they aren´t about itself. It had fun, though, in a weasel-sized version of Matera. Population: 1.
